Back in 1988, Callaway created the legendary “Sledgehammer” Corvette, a heavily modified C4 that reached an astonishing 254.76 mph, setting a street‑legal speed record that stood for nearly 22 years. Driven by John Lingenfelter at the Transportation Research Center, the car packed an 880‑hp twin‑turbo 5.7‑liter V8 with a Cosworth crankshaft, forged pistons, and a dry‑sump oil system producing 772 lb‑ft of torque. Despite its extreme performance, it retained a six‑speed manual gearbox, weighed just 3,664 pounds, and could sprint from 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Reinforced with special Goodyear tires rated for 300 mph, an AeroBody kit, and chassis upgrades, the Sledgehammer was both brutally fast and road‑ready—driven from Connecticut to Ohio, run at record speed, and then driven back without a trailer.
